The city of Tuymazy is the center of the Tuymazinskiy Region in the Republic of Bashkortostan. Bashkortostan is an administrative-territorial unit of subnational division. It is one of over 70 “subjects” of Russian Federation. The city is surrounded by a number of the satellite suburban settlements in the distance 5-25 km from the city. The settlements are quite big, closely linked to the city in all concerns and are a part of the city life. The data provided in the community profile is mostly given both for the region and for the city because they are closely integrated into each other by economical and social connections. At the decision making level they are considered as one entity.

Location. Geographically the city and the region are situated on the western border with the Republic of Tatarstan. The distance from Moscow, the capital of the country is 1300 km and from the capital of the republic 170 км. The city and the region is connected with the rest of the country by a federal highway and a railroad running from Moscow to Vladivostok. (p. 11-12).

Size. The area of the region and the city is 2403 km2. This constitutes 1.6% of the area of the Republic. The area of the city itself is 43 km2. кв км., района ( с поселками) – 2360,0 кв км. В районе 111 населенных пунктов.(книга стр7)

Topography.· The region is located on the Bugulma-Belebey Upland on East European Plain. There are small rivers the Ik, the Usen, the Kidash. There is alos the lake Kandrykul, which is one of 5 the most significant natural objects in the Republic of Bashkortostan. A number of children’s camps and health and tourist resorts are located on the shores of the lake.

The climate is moderate continental. The area enjoys 4 seasonal change. Winters are cold with snow, and summers are hot. There is a probably of both draughts and showers in summer. In 2004 average temperatures in the area were -10 C in winter (coldest was -32C) , and +20C in summer (with +34.9 C the hottest) (p.142)

The city is divided into two parts by the railway. The area “Za liniyey” (literally, “behind the railroad”) is one of the oldest parts of the city,
